Restaurant POS software in Nigeria: set up menu prices and stock clearly

Organise restaurant menu items, portions and prices before using POS software. Work through a Nigerian takeaway example and understand stock limits.

By ReceiptPro NG Editorial · Published

Restaurant sales software is easier to use when the menu entries describe exactly what the customer receives. If a cashier must guess whether fish is included in a plate price, checkout becomes slower and your sales records become difficult to explain.

Define what one item means

For a fictional takeaway, a rice plate costs ₦2,500, an extra portion of fish costs ₦1,500 and a bottled drink costs ₦600. One plate, one extra fish and two drinks total ₦5,200 before any applicable adjustments.

Name each entry clearly. If you sell small and large portions, separate catalogue items can make the choice explicit. Do not rely on an unwritten rule that one quantity sometimes means one plate and sometimes means one tray.

Decide what you are tracking

ReceiptPro can record menu items as goods or services according to the workflow you configure. Stock-tracked goods need meaningful opening quantities. Services do not use stock.

Tracking a prepared meal as one item does not automatically deduct rice, cooking oil, packaging and protein ingredients. This release does not provide recipe costing or automatic ingredient stock consumption. If that is essential to your kitchen, evaluate a system designed for it or keep a separate ingredient-control process.

Build a quick counter-sale routine

Add a small set of common menu items first. In POS, search or choose a quick pick, set the quantity and review the basket. Correct mistakes before moving to payment. Keep descriptions short enough to recognise on a phone while still distinguishing the portion.

Record cash, a transfer you have confirmed in your own account, or an externally processed card-terminal payment. An unpaid catering quote belongs in the proforma workflow rather than being entered as cash collected.

Separate restaurant features from invoicing features

A restaurant may need table management, kitchen order tickets, split bills, delivery dispatch or waiter workflows. ReceiptPro's current invoicing and counter-sales tools should not be assumed to include these restaurant operations. Ask about the exact feature and test it before choosing software for a full-service venue.

If you add a delivery or service charge to an agreed price, show it clearly through a supported document workflow. Do not quietly increase an unrelated food line to hide the adjustment.

Check documents and the end of the day

Try the A4 and 80 mm layouts with a realistic order. Paid plans are required for browser printing and WhatsApp text receipt sharing. Compare the day's recorded payments with cash, bank transfers and terminal evidence rather than treating every issued invoice as money received.

The restaurant setup tutorial gives the broader account-to-sale steps. Use the proforma guide when a customer is still considering an event or bulk-food order.
