POS machine vs POS software in Nigeria: which one does your business need?
Understand the difference between a bank POS terminal and point-of-sale software in Nigeria, including payments, receipts, stock and sales records.
In Nigeria, POS can mean a card-payment terminal, an agent-banking business or the software used at a shop counter. Those meanings are related to transactions but do not describe the same service. Start by asking what you need the system to do.
A payment terminal processes a payment
A banking or payment provider supplies a terminal or payment service under its own arrangements. That provider handles the payment process and supplies its transaction result. Fees, settlement, eligibility and support depend on the provider and the merchant arrangement.
A payment confirmation tells you about the payment. It does not necessarily maintain your product catalogue, supplier costs or opening stock. Check the actual terminal and provider features rather than assuming those records are included.
Sales software organises the transaction
Point-of-sale software can help you choose goods or services, calculate a basket and create a record of what was sold. Some systems also track stock, customers or staff permissions. The exact scope varies between products.
ReceiptPro NG records sales and creates invoices and receipts. It can record cash, a manually confirmed bank transfer or a payment made on an external card terminal. It does not supply a banking terminal or directly process the customer's card transaction.
You may use both together
Consider a fictional shop selling a charger for ₦8,000. The cashier enters the item in the sales software, the customer pays using an external terminal, and the cashier checks the terminal result before recording the sale using the terminal payment method.
At closing, compare the recorded terminal sales with the payment provider's actual transactions and settlement records. A sale total and a bank deposit may differ because of timing, fees or other provider adjustments. Investigate the difference rather than silently changing a receipt to make two totals agree.
Ask these questions before choosing
- Do you need to accept a payment, organise stock, issue invoices, or all three?
- Which payment methods must the business confirm manually?
- Can a cashier correct a basket before recording it?
- What can each staff role view or change?
- What happens if connectivity is lost?
- Which receipt formats, printers and export options have you actually tested?
A receipt-printer connection, cash drawer or barcode scanner should not be assumed to work simply because a product is called POS software. Test your own equipment and confirm which integrations are supported.
Keep subscriptions separate from customer payments
Paying for a ReceiptPro Growth or Pro subscription enables the relevant app tools. It does not automatically connect your customers' bank payments or replace your payment provider.
